SCHOOL INTRA/EXTRA-MURALS
WE BELIEVE IT IS ESSENTIAL THAT CHILDREN ARE ENCOURAGED TO SING, PLAY AND MOVE THEIR BODIES TO MUSIC AS A FORM OF FREE AND CREATIVE EXPRESSION.
Music is a powerful outlet for the complex emotions that children experience as they navigate a path in an ever-changing landscape.
At Mini Music-Makers, we aim to provide experiences and tools so that children develop resilience through the many therapeutic benefits of music.
OUR PROGRAMME IS DESIGNED FOR KIDS FROM 18 MONTHS UP TO AGE 9
Our classes are loosely structured according age groups:
- 18 months to 4 years
- 5 to 6 years
- 7 to 9 years
(We know that some schools structure their classes differently and we are happy for you to guide us in terms of your learners unique abilities)
Currently, the maximum size of a class is 8 learners.
WHY SHOULD YOU CONSIDER HAVING US AT YOUR SCHOOL?
We believe it is essential that children are encouraged to sing, play and move their bodies to music as a form of free and creative expression.
Music is a powerful outlet for the complex emotions that children experience as they navigate a path in an ever-changing landscape.
At Mini Music-Makers, we aim to provide experiences and tools so that children develop resilience through the many therapeutic benefits of music.
Our aim is to introduce toddlers and children to music in a way that they can relate to; which basically means a lot of playing, experimenting with sounds and instruments and having tons of fun!
We offer a wide selection of fun instruments to choose from, aside from the ones they bring along. ie Their hands, feet and mouths.
Our classes ensure that children will be engaged, active and excited about music by using familiar sing-a-long songs with fun actions, and lots of dancing.
We encourage children to feel the rhythm in a fun, free-style manner. There is no “right” or “wrong” way to move to music; nor is there a right or wrong way to sing (No matter what Randall Abrahams says!)
Moving to music while playing any instrument is wonderful for improving proprioception and co-ordination while also engaging the whole brain. It is especially regulating for sensory-seeking children, as well as children with other, specific needs. Eg. ADHD etc.

THE MAGIC OF MUSIC
MUSIC ISN’T JUST FUN — IT’S POWERFUL!
- Have you noticed how a favourite song can spark the same emotions you had when you first heard it?
- That’s not just emotion — it’s brain growth in action, and it starts in the womb! Babies are born ready to move to music.
- Music is more engaging than speech — that’s why singing and rhythmic movement calms little ones faster than talking
- And , of course, it sparks those heart-warming little dance moves.
DID YOU KNOW?
Music activates both the left and right brain at the same time, and the activation of both hemispheres encourages brain development and maximizes learning.
MUSIC IS A GIFT
It instills confidence, enhances memory, and aids in language skills. It’s also a mood-lifter, a tool for self-regulation, and a bridge to diverse cultures.
WE LOVE MUSIC!
It’s so beneficial for our little ones and it brings them so much joy. It boosts their brain development, nurtures creativity, and sharpens social interactions.
ABOUT MELANIE LOWE
My name is Melanie Lowe, and I have been fortunate to enjoy many wonderful opportunities since becoming the runner-up in the first season of Idols SA. I’ve released successful albums and EPs, and my original songs are playlisted on radio stations across the country. I was honoured to be selected by SAMRO as one of the top 20 songwriters in South Africa, and I have also had the privilege of both winning, and being nominated for, South African Music Awards.
As a neurodivergent mom of neurodivergent children, I have seen firsthand the profound effect that music has on children from all walks of life. When my youngest daughter was a baby, she would lie on her tummy and use the floor as her drum, bouncing her little body around with laughter and joy. She was dancing long before she could walk. I have always called her my “Fancy Dancer.”
Music gave me an outlet for my emotions. It strengthened my self-esteem, confidence, and focus. For someone like me, living with ADHD as both a child and an adult, it was truly life-changing.
Not many people get to live their dream the way I have. My passion for music, and the opportunities that came my way, changed the course of my life. And it all began with a broken guitar my dad bought for R5, and a teacher at my school who offered free guitar lessons.
That teacher invested her time and patience in a younger version of me. She recognised my love for music and went out of her way to help me build the confidence I needed to pursue it. Proof that sometimes, all it takes is one person to change a life.
ABOUT MINI MUSIC-MAKERS
“Everyone’s a genius, but, judge a fish by its ability to climb a tree and it will live its whole life believing that it’s stupid.”
Mini Music-Makers is a concept created by Everything Mellow. We are a small Durban-based business that has gradually branched out into several industries over the years — one of them being Mellow Music.
Mellow Music offers beginner guitar lessons and vocal coaching, both privately and at schools. Through this, we’ve become aware of how little music learners are exposed to in their daily lives. And yet, we’ve witnessed firsthand the powerful, life-changing impact that music can have on a child.
With so little exposure to music in all its shapes and forms, it’s no surprise that many South African artists have struggled to find direction, support, and opportunities to grow over the years.
It’s hard to imagine life without music. Of course, not everyone aspires to be a musician — but every human being has some kind of connection to music, however small. Think of any event you’ve attended, and then imagine it without music — no background sounds, no atmosphere. Pretty boring, right? And maybe a little awkward, with nothing to fill the empty spaces… or is that just us?
That’s why it’s so important for children to experience the gift of music and rhythm as early as possible. Moving to music and playing an instrument helps improve coordination and proprioception, while also engaging the whole brain. For sensory-seeking children, it can be especially regulating.
This is the driving force behind Mini Music-Makers. Music and rhythm are inherently part of us all. Even babies show awareness when music is played — some go quiet, listening intently, while others wriggle, bounce, or try to dance before they can even sit or stand.
As children, we move to music without inhibition. Most parents have at least one video of their child dancing in a way that’s both hilarious and beautiful. The truth is, there’s no “right” or “wrong” way to move to music — and kids instinctively understand that freedom. Sadly, most of us lose it as we grow older.
Have you ever joined your kids in their freestyle dance? Not just as a joke, but by truly letting go — letting your body lead you, the way it did when you were a child? Many of us have danced when no one is watching, and we know how good it feels. Music regulates adults, too — and so much more.
At Mini Music-Makers, we harness the power of music to help children regulate themselves, express their emotions, and develop confidence and self-esteem. Whether it’s playing a simple percussion instrument, singing, or dancing along to a favourite song, music becomes both fun and transformative.
Instilling a love of music in children ensures that the joy, confidence, and skills they gain will stay with them into their teen years and adulthood. After all, it only takes hearing one song to transport you back to a moment in time — bringing all the emotions and memories flooding back as if you were right there again. That is the power of music!
We look forward to living the music with you and your children!
